Abdominal distension describes when the abdomen extends beyond the normal girth of the stomach and waist due to the accumulation of gas or fluid the abdominal space. It is often accompanied by nausea or cramps.

In most cases, the cause is prosaic and can be treated with anti-gas medication. However, it can also be a symptom of heart disease and cirrhosis, so a full examination and medical history are indicated.
