An acute illness is one that either has a rapid onset or a quick progression.  However, it does not imply the disease is serious or life threatening.  A common cold is acute, but harmless.

Compare with chronic.  In many cases, different forms of disease with the same symptoms are classified as acute or chronic depending on their progression (e.g. acute intermittent porphyria)
