Bronchospasm is a sudden contraction of the muscles that surround the lungs' bronchial tubes. It is always caused by a release of mast cells, but can have several underlying causes, such as asthma, bronchitis, anaphylaxis, a side effect of the use of some drugs, and a few other causes. The constriction of the tubes leads to difficulty in breathing. It can also be a consequence of intubation during surgery.
