Colic describes any pain with sudden onset which can also stop abrubtly. It is usually due to severe contractions of a tube in order to force out an obstruction. It is a typical symptom of kidney stones and gallstones. It's often accompanied by vomiting and sweating.

In infants, it describes incessant crying for no apparent reason and is usually not a symptom of any serious underlying condition.
