Fludrocortisone is one of the steroids sold and is sold under the brand name of Florinef (TM).  It is used to replace the hormone aldosterone which is produced by the adrenal glands.  It is commonly used to treat Addison's disease and congenital adrenal hyperplasia.  For diagnostic purposes, it can be used to confirm Conn's syndrome, a type of adenoma that produces aldosterone.

Fludrocortisone changes levels of plasmasodium and potassium, which must be monitored until the proper dose of the drug is established.

Fludrocortisone has many side effects including sodium and water retention, swelling, high blood pressureheadachehypokalemiafatigue, increased risk of infections, slower healing, increased sweating and others.
