Folate, also known as Vitamin B9 and is sold as folic acid as a dietary supplement, is a group of similar compounds that act as a micronutrient, the lack of which can lead to a form of anemia as well as deficiencies in the fundamental components of both DNA and RNA. It is vital for the formation of all new cells. However, it also prevents DNA mutation and studies have found that persons who consume less folate have a higher risk of certain types of cancer.

Folate is readily available in many foods such as leafy green vegetables, strawberries, many legumes, nuts, organ meats, eggs and some seafoods. The recommended daily minimum for most adults is 400 micrograms, about the amount in 400 grams of vegetables. Pregnant women should consume more.
