A hematoma describes any discrete accumulation of blood outside of the blood vessels.  It is usually the result of internal bleeding which cannot penetrate the skin.  A bruise is a common and generally non-life threatening type of hematoma.  However, some hematomas, particularly those that are not reabsorbed into the body or become larger, can become dangerous, particularly those in or near the brain.  These usually require surgery in order to drain them.
