A medical code is a shorthand abbreviation to describe a patient, usually during a time of severe medical emergency.

Often, doctors will ask for medical assistance in attending to a patient while in an emergency by "calling a code".

When doctors' patients are undergoing such emergencies and a code is called for them, their beepers will begin immediately beeping urgently to alert them of the danger.
