An infarction is an internal blockage of a major artery, either from a clot or arterial plaque, which prevents blood from flowing to the affected part. The result of an infarction in the coronary artery is a heart attack. The result of an infarction in the carotid artery is a stroke. However, infarctions can affect any artery in the body. The standard treatment for an infarction is blood thinners.

House[]

Gregory House's disability was the result of an infarction in the artery that led to his thigh muscle. Unfortunately, the infarction was not recognized for several days, at which time the thigh was suffering from muscle death. The dead muscle had to be removed to prevent it from necrotizing and poisoning the rest of the body. House ultimately survived but was left with permanent pain in his right leg that forced him to also begin using a cane to assist in his walking.
