A laceration is an irregular tear in the skin, longer than it is wide, that is generally caused by contact between the skin and a rough or surface such as pavement, broken glass, or even a blunt instrument like a baseball bat or hammer. It should be distinguished from an incision, which is a break caused by a sharp straight object, like a blade.
