Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital is a hospital seen at the end of Season 5 and the beginning of Season 6. It was established in 1876.
History[]
Season 5[]
The exterior of Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital was seen briefly near the end of the Season 5 finale episode, Both Sides Now where sometime in May 2009 after discovering that he was suffering from psychosis caused by his many years of taking Vicodin and the realization that his memories of spending a night with his former girlfriend/boss Lisa Cuddy and even detoxing from Vicodin had all been hallucinations, Gregory House, a Doctor and the head of the Diagnostics Department at Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in Princeton arrived at the facility, having been brought there by his best friend, Dr. James Wilson, House voluntarily checking himself in to receive treatment, the event occurring at the same time as Allison Cameron and Robert Chase, two of House's former fellows married each other.
Season 6[]
Presumably after being checked in, House underwent an extremely painful detox which was seen in the first few moments of the Season 6 premiere episode, Broken which saw him lying in bed, passed out or delirious while even still having a craving for Vicodin. His behavior soon resulted in restrains being placed around his hands and ankles so that he could continue detoxing without hurting himself or any of the other Nurses.
Sometime later, House awoke to discover that all traces of Vicodin had gone from the system with his leg pain a lot less worse than in the past.
He began preparing to leave, only to learn from Nurse Valez that Dr. Darryl Nolan wanted to talk to him before him, Nolan having left specific instructions.
Upon meeting Nolan, House learnt that if he sought to get his medical licence back, he would have to agree to further treatment, House agreeing to do so.
That same day, House found himself being transferred to Ward 6, a ward for patients who can roam around freely, the patients having been declared not a danger to themselves or others, the ward itself manned by various Doctors and Nurses including Dr. Nolan himself.
House first led a rebellion with help from the other patients so they could get rackets for the ping-pong games they regularly played. He didn't participate in group therapy or even talk to any of the other Doctors or Nurses, usually resorting to threats in hopes he would be able to leave Mayfield faster than usual and while out on the basketball court, resorted to exposing the other patients's weaknesses much to their shock, an event that led him to spend some time by himself in a lone room.
He also didn't take his meds, unaware that Nolan had started feeding House sugar pills with Nolan later informing House of his knowledge of House's actions.
House's refusal to cooperate continued right until when having befriended a patient named Steve or "Freedom Master", a day out for the two men ended in disaster when Steve tried to commit suicide, surviving but was left badly injured in the process.
When Nolan attempted to get him transferred to another hospital, having reached the end of his rope, House, realizing the consequences of his actions finally relented and begged Nolan for help.
Over the next few weeks, House cooperated, discussing his feelings with the staff and even began having sessions with Nolan himself while taking meds as well.
He later had a brief affair with Lydia, the sister-in-law of Annie Bohm or the Silent Girl that saw the two of them sleeping together but it ended when Lydia refused to leave her husband and family for him, devastating House.
That night, House approached Nolan and informed him of the development, Nolan praising House for talking to him instead of using drugs with Nolan revealing he would write a letter of recommendation for House to get his medical licence back.
The next morning, with everyone in attendance, House received his own "Happy Re-Birthday" cake and a few hours later, presumably left Mayfield, returning to Princeton where a few weeks later, his medical licence was reinstated, resulting in him returning to his original position as the head of the Diagnostics Department at PPTH.

In Real Life[]
The building shown in exterior shots was the largely abandoned Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in New Jersey which opened in 1876 and closed in 2008, having been abandoned for many years.
On the House Season 6 DVD, Hugh Laurie (Gregory House) and Executive Producer Katie Jacobs who also directed "Broken" travelled to the real-life abandoned hospital in New Jersey and filmed a Concept Reel for the episode, one that shows House on the hospital grounds, doing various things including sitting on a bench, playing with his cane and wearing a hat, smoking, playing with cards, walking around the hospital grounds, and even being dragged back into the building by hospital staff, House losing one of his sneakers in the process.
The interior shots of the hospital and Mayfield itself were all done at the studio where House was filmed in Los Angeles, California, the site resembling the original interior of the now abandoned building.
In addition, it was located on the same area that served as the main filming location for House's apartment and during the filming of the scenes for the hospital set, the apartment set was dismantled and placed into storage.
Despite a campaign to save it, demolition of the building began in April 2015 and came to an end in October 2015.
