Midazolam is a sedative used for anesthesia, treatment of insomnia and severe agitation. It increases sleepiness and reduces anxiety.It can be administered in many ways, including orally, intravenously, and into a muscle. Onset is from five to fifteen minutes depending on how it is administered. It lasts from one to six hours depending on dose. It is also very inexpensive.
However, it's most severe side effect is preventing the patient from forming new memories. It can also depress breathing and lower blood pressure. Discontinuing the drug can cause withdrawal in long-term users. In rare cases, it can have the opposite of its intended effect and result in increased activity, although this is more common in children and the elderly. It's use should be avoided during pregnancy. It also has several medicine interactions, particularly with alcohol.
An overdose is a medical emergency, but is rarely life-threatening in an otherwise healthy individual.
