Neurosis is a psychiatric symptom characterized by a feeling of distress, but without hallucinations or delusions, and where behavior remains within the range of socially acceptable norms. Once considered a separate diagnosis, it is now seen as a symptom of other psychiatric disorders.
The most common diagnosis for a neurotic patient is generalized anxiety disorder. However, it can also point to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder or one of any of the phobias or personality disorders.
