Platelets are cells in the blood plasma that help with the clotting of blood. While low numbers of platelets may cause clotting problems, excessive number of platelets can cause thrombosis.
Formation and destruction[edit | edit source]
Platelets are formed by budding off from megakaryocytes. Each megakaryocyte can produce between five and ten thousand platelets. They are destroyed by the liver when they die.
