The prostate is a gland that surrounds the cervix of the bladder and the urethra in a male. It is both muscular and glandular and is encased in a capsule made of smooth muscle fibres. It secretes the thin, slightly alkaline fluid that is then used in seminal fluid.

Enlargement of the prostate is common after middle age and may impede urination to the point of retention. In men past 60, tumors, calculi and nodular hyperplasia are common.
