Schizotypal personality disorder (StPD) is a personality disorder characterized by a preference to be let alone and the avoidance of intimate personal relationships. StPD is far more common in men than it is in women. It can be best described as an extreme case of a person with an introverted personality, very similar to a patient with schizoid personality disorder. In addition to having few relationships with either friends of family, schizotypal patients tend to be passive in only adverse situations. However, many people with the disorder tend to be very independent from others, often have well-developed interests, and can have relationships with those who share their interests if there is no expectation of intimacy. Unlike a schizoid patient, a schizotypal patient believes in supernatural things, such as magic and ghosts, being real, and he or she may believe that he or she has the ability to read the minds of others via telepathy. Furthermore, a schizotypal patient enjoys dressing up or cosplaying as a fictional character, and is more sociable and eccentric than a schizoid patient.
