Steve McQueen is House's pet rat
Steve McQueen used to be a resident of Stacy Warner's house. In order to try to impress Stacy, House hunted him in her house. However, when he found McQueen, he found that the rat appeared to be ill - he noted that Steve was turning his head to the side, which is not a usual behavior for a rat (see photo). Instead of killing him, he named the rat and eventually captured him and treated him.
