Zolpidem (brand name: Ambien) is a non-benzodiazepine sedative (also called a hypnotic) primarily used for helping people get to sleep. It is also used off-label for other uses that vary. Zolpidem was discovered in 1988 and entered the European market same year followed by the American market around the late 90s. It is one of the most popular medications for sleep in the United States used by over 10 million Americans. Zolpidem comes in a vary of different formulations such as a buccal film to be applied in the mouth, rectal suppositories, tablets with extended release tablets too. The medication was featured twice in House MD.

  • In both times the Medication was shown in the series it was shown that the medication comes in 200mg capsules and 600mg capsule formulations. A person could reasonably take that much due to the LD50 of Zolpidem being very high however they would be very impaired. The highest dose of Zolpidem is Ambien CR (Zolpidem tartrate extended release 12.5mg) and the highest dose of the cheapest generic is 10mg.
